Chocolate smell 0x0x0, wooden cube 120x120x120, vent grids,
Back then in Noisiel, it used to smell like chocolate,” says a former warehouse worker assigned to the candy section at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
How can this fleeting scent — so deeply rooted in Noisiel’s memory — be brought back to life?
Scent has no property rights. By its very nature, it is volatile and immaterial. Scent is not protected by copyright law.
How can one lay claim to it and turn it into a work of art?
Is it even possible?
These questions shaped my research residency at La Ferme du Buisson.
Produced and presented at the end of an in.plano residency at the Centre for Contemporary Art, La Ferme du Buisson, Noisiel, France.
